Storytelling lesson
Students: 4-5 years old, kindergarten, beginners
Aims:
to practice listening comprehension
to practice reading (pictures) comprehension
to practice predictive skills
Objectives:
by the end of the lesson students will be able to recognize and name four new animals (duck, centipede, horse, monkey)
by the end of the lesson students will be able to match names of feet to the animals (webbed feet, many feet, hooves, feet with toes)
Materials:
the book: “Whose feet?” by Fiona Munro, published by Ladybird Books Ltd (http://www.puffin.co.uk/nf/Book/BookDisplay/0,,9781409305620,00.html)
Procedure:
Teacher asks the children if they know the word “feet”. If they don't she shows them her feet, their feet etc. Then she tells them that animals have all kinds of feet and they're going to read a book to find out.
Teacher shows the book to the children. She reads each page showing it to the children and asking them to guess what animal is hiding under the flap. Then she flips it over to see if they were right.
After the first reading she asks them what animals were in the book. Then she tells them to listen carefully for a second time and remember what were the feet of these animals. She reads again.
After the reading teacher asks the children to name or describe what feet the animals in the book have. She helps when the children have trouble.
As a sum up she repeats with the children the animals along with their feet, e.g. A duck has webbed feet, a horse has hooves.
