In 1984, a young Frenchman called Patrick Bauer decided to take a break from his job as a rock concert promoter and do a trek across the Sahara Desert. He covered 200 miles with all the things he needed on his back. While he was trekking, he got the idea to create an international footrace, and two years later, in 1986, the 'Marathon of the Sands' was bom. These days, at least 1,000 runners take part, including many English and French participants. One of the most notable competitors in the race is Lahcen Ahansal, a Moroccan, who has won the race ten times. The race starts on a Sunday and the daily water ration is 9 litres.

Yes, I would take part in the Marathon des Sables. It would be a great test of my physical and psychological strength. The Sahara Desert would be a fascinating place to see and I am surę I would make friends with other competitors. Altogether, it would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience! / No, I defimtely wouldn't take part in this marathon. I think you'd have to be crazy to do it. Putting yourself under such strain in such hot weather would be taking a very great health risk. I don't think I could tolerate the primitive living conditions, either!
