The second example is the head of a jester who is supposed to look like a happy, good-natured type. The figurÄ™ is in walnut and the head is 4.5cm (1 Va") high. Figs 130 and 131 show the face roughed out with gouges, the main forms in place. Notice the shadows under the cheeks where the mouth is to be pulled back in a big smile.

In Fig. 132, the left-hand side of the face has been worked on with a burr shaping the eye Socket and the nostril, the lips and the deep crease on the cheek. On the right-hand side these details have been enhanced with burrs and gouges. The eye has been cut in and the lips shaped. The deep fold at the sides of the mouth are taken from the boy in Figs 68 and 69,
