With two strands of yarn held together and using the knitted method (see Glossary), CO 371 sts. Break off one strand and cont with a single strand of yarn to end of shawl. Knit 1 row. Establish patts for lace edge charts as foli: Work Row 1 of Right Lace Edge chart across first 186 sts placing a marker (pm) after the first 4 sts, then work Row 1 of Left Lace Edge chart over 185 sts and pm before last 4 sts—369 sts rem. Place a removable marker in the center st itself (shaded in gold) and not on the needle: move this marker up every rew rows so you can always easily identify the center st. Work Rows 2-22 of charts—341 sts rem: 1 center st: 162 sts on each side of center inside markers; 8 garter border sts at each side.
• The shawl begins with stitches cast on for the lace edge along the two lower sides using a double strand of yarn, then the rest of the shawl is worked using a single strand.
• Stitches are decreased inside each garter-stitch border and on each side of the center stitch (be-gmning in Row 7) to produce a triangle shape.
• The first time you work Rows 79-94 of the center charts, there will be enough stitches to work each red outlined repeat box 9 times. The stitch count decreases by 32 stitches each time you work Rows 79-94, so there will be 16 fewer stitches in each half (two fewer 8-stitch pattern repeats) ev-ery time these rows are repeated. Work each red outlined box 7 times the second time you work Rows 79-94, then work each red outlined box 5 times on the third repeat. 3 times on the fourth repeat, and only once on the fifth and finał repeat.
• When only the stitches of the garter borders and a single stitch from each main section remain. the stitches are divided into two equal groups and grafted together at the center of the top edge to finish the shawl.
