Letters to newspapers: If there is scmething that worries you apout your local environment, think very hard about it and make notes about why it is so disturbing. Perhaps the Council intends to close a wildlife area, run a motorway across your village, knock down an old building, fell some very ancient trees to make way for a supermarket. Try to find out the facts behind the story, when it is to happen and why. Assemble your facts and suggest suitable alternatives, then put them together into a polite letter to your local newspaper. Do a first draft, correct spelling and punctuation and write it out in best. Make surę that you set out your letter correctly. Find out the correct address of the editor from the paper. Keep a copy of your letter and make a display of the problem, your letter and any reply you receive. Write also to the appropriate councillor involved. Work as a group and think of things that would make your village/town a better place to live in: less litter, a safe playground for pre*school children, a scented garden for blind people, a nature/urban trail, safer pavement surfaces for older people etc. Make notes, consider your reasons, suggest the best place to start, say whether you think children might be able to help in the planning. Plan the form of your letter together. Check spelling and punctuation. Ask the neatest person in the group to write the letter or put it on the word-processor. Fołlow the progress of your suggestion and keep ćopies of all the letters.
