The campaign for women to win the vote (suffrage) was fought on both sides of the Atlantic from the mid-1800s.
Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) was the founder of the women's suffrage movement in Great Britain.
Her fellow campaigners, known as suffragettes, were frequently involved in violent clashes with the police.
Their campaign was suspended during World War I. In 1918, women over the age of 30 won the vote in Great Britain.
British women over the age of 21 voted for the first time in 1929.
For most of the 1900s, Russia and the countries of Eastern Europę were single-party States ruled by the Communist Party.

Founded in 301 ce, the world’s oldest surviving republic is the tiny European State of San Marino. Its constitution dates back to 1600.
