In August 1963, morę than 200,000 people marched through Washington, D.C., U.S.A., to demand fuli civil rights for African Americans. At that time, black people in the Southern States did not enjoy the same rights as white people. They were unable to vote, had to attend separate schools, and could not eat in the same bars and restaurants.
African Americans using the municipal bus service in Montgomery, Alabama, were obliged to give up their seats to white people if the bus was fuli.
