Quartz Arenite
The rock in 109 and 110 is a quartz arenite, a terrigenous clastic sedimenl in which the majority of grains are quartz. In this example the quartz grains are single detrital crystals with uniform interference colours. The sediment is poorly-cement-ed so that substantial pore-space remains, speckled in plane-polarized light (109) and black under crossed polars (110). The quartz grains havc a thin coating con-taining iron oxide, responsible for the faint orange colour at the edges of some grains. The rock has been moderately compacted and some grains have been weld-ed to their neighbours or penetrate them slightly (e.g. upper left of field of view).
