It takes place in Notting Hill, an area of London, every year in August and it lasts for three days.
On Saturday, the first day, there is a competition between groups of musicians who play special metal drums called 'Steel drums’. Sunday is children's day and there is a special paradę for children and young people. The main paradę is on Monday.
H The carnival began in 1959.
It was the idea of members of the Caribbean community who lived there. At first, it was an indoor event, but in 1965 it moved outdoors. At this time, only about 1,000 people went to the carnival each year, but the numbers soon started to grow. B; 2000, there were about 1.5 million spectators!
H . In the past, there has been some trouble at the carnii/al, especially between spectators and the police. And there have also been worries about safety because the crowds are large and the streets are narrow. For these reasons, some people have suggested banning the carnńral. However, it is now an important event in London - notjust for the Caribbean community there, but for the whole Capital.
