this stage on a smali head l tind it easier to use a rotary burr rather than chisels. In this case, start with a 3mm bal I shaped cutter, stroking the wood from side to side, Fig. 17. Using the burr, hollowout the areasround the eyeballs leaving them protruding as shallow domes. Particular attention must be paid to the inside and outside corners where there are deep recesses.
Next, move down to the wings of nose. Having measures the length of the nose from the tip to the backsofthe nostrils, reducethecheeks until you have ach ieved the correct length, Fig. 18. A smal ler burr will be necessary in the tight curve around the nostrils.
The lips and chin can now be roughly shaped. The basie shape of the face should now be complete and appear as Fig. 19.
