In Fig. 41 the forehead corrugations are formed using a knife to cut a deep linÄ™ and then rounding off * with a smali fiat gouge. The wrinkles under the eyes are madÄ™ with a smali 'u' shaped gouge. The desired expression is now beginning to appear. In the fin-ished head, Figs 42, 43 and 44, this is enhanced by the irises which reveal the tact that the eyes are looking upward, thereby explaining the turrowed brow and the deepening ot the hollows at each side of the mouth. The turrows in the cheeks are sharply defined to create morÄ™ tension in the jaw.
In comparing the tinished head with the original drawings, various differences can be seen. The cor-ners of the mouth have been raised and deepened slightly to make morÄ™ of a smile. For the same reason, the cheeks have been pushed upwards as they do when the mouth forms a grin. Finally, the eyebrows have been raised to create a morÄ™ alert and hopeful look. The tinished carving is shown in Fig. 45.
