Figs 105 and 106 showing a boy blowing a flute were used to create the ugly character in Fig. 107 blowing bubbles. In truth I do not think people puff out their cheeks to blow flutes or bubbles but I felt it was a morę expressive face than the real thing. Fig. 105 is an excellent picture — notice how the raised eye-brows and furrowed brow, the slightly closed eyes, the top lip pressed against the nose, the muscles in the neck and even the quiff of hair all seem to contribute to the feelingof blowing. Fig. 106isnotso expressive because the boy has become self-con-scious, looking at the photographer.
In my carving I have exaggerated the eyebrows and bony ridges above the eyes. The cheeks are morÄ™ defined than on the boy and the features are gener-ally coarser and morÄ™ pronounced as one would
