The traces of concern on the Masa i warrior's face, Fig. 114, indicated by the slight furrowing ot the forehead and the rather tight lips, show that a mini-mal amount of carving can create a subtle expres-sion. Fig. 115 shows the jester peering from behind a mask — What is he thinking? — perhaps he is ashamed of being laughed at, or just got stage fright. The lines on the forehead are somewhat stylised, but this is in keeping with the whole figurÄ™ and is reminis-cent of theatrical make up.
