normal, open-eyed, raised eyebrow is carved the upper fid is morÄ™ visibÅ‚e and the space above it curving upward. When the brow is lowered and like an overhanging shelf, a very dirferent shape must be allowed.

Clearly this is seen in Fig. 122 where the woman on the left has one raised eyebrow. Compare the space above the eye within the two maÅ‚e faces. In the face, lower right, the eyes are very reduced in aper-ture with much thickening of the lids and the sur-rounding areas. The normal process of carving an eyehardly applies here. Theeyeball, normally a high point, here becomes the lowest point in a mass of crumpled skin.

In Fig. 84, faces of anger, there are some quite extraordinary contortions of the brow area. These must be carved very carefully in order to be convinc-ing rather than artificially theatrical. No 'V' tools will suffice — the skin must be carefully modelled to show the rounded swelling forms created by extreme muscular activity. These are not grooves on smooth surfaces, but corrugations of a sunÄ…ce. Fine work with knife and chisels, followed perhaps by rifler files and sanding are required.
