Interrogative and Mlainaton Words

Interrogative Words and Expressions

Asking questions is one of the most useful linguistic functions we can learn in a new language. The responses we get let us gauge how well we are communicating. The five W English question words gather information on any topie: who?what? when?where? and why? In Spanish, the first three of these basie questions start with a /k/ sound: £Quien?, £Que?, and £Cuando? Notę that interrogative words require a written accent mark. Each is preceded by an inverted question mark; a normal question mark ends each written question.

Interrogative Words in Spanish

Interrogative words (palabras interrogativas) can be adjectives fol-lowed by a noun: £Cuantos alumnos? How many students?, while some are adverbs: iDónde vives? Where doyou live? Others are pro-nouns: iCual necesitas? Which one doyou need?

Here are the most commonly used interrogative words:
