The duodenum. jejunum, and ileum comprise ihe smali intestine. Anatomically, the duodenum is the shortest segment (about 25 cm long), while the jejunum and ileum are about (v7 meters long, with the jejunum accounting tor the proxirnal two-fifths ot this length. Compared with the ileum. the jejunum has a larger diameter, Ihicker
walls, greater vascularity, less mesenteric fat tewer lymph nodules .md larger and taller circular mucosal tolds (plicae circulares). The absorptive surface is larger in the jejunum as evident in the barium contrast x-rays of each segment.
