of the pistons in slots in the caliper. The pads are free to move axially and are pressed against the brake disc from both sides when the brakes are applied. The disc is protected against dirt and damage by a splash shield on the inside and the wheel itself on the outside.
The rear axle is fitted with composite type brake drums which have a stamped Steel back and cast iron friction surfaces. The drums are now separated from the wheel hubs so that most operations on the brakes can be car-ried out without removing the axle shaft nuts.

There are two holes in the backplate through which the brake shoes can be adjusted and two further holes for checking the lining thickness. The holes are sealed with rubber plugs to keep out dirt and water.
