His mother died giving birth to him and, aftcr fading to drown the newborn cliild. Johann ’s father committed suicide.The orphaned Shmidt became a beggar and thief. though be sometimes took menial jobs. Shmidt was working as a bellboy in a hotel whcn Adolf Hitler, the dictator of Nazi Germany, paid a visit there.
