When I was a kid, my dad gave me a little pocketknife and a giant cardboard box he found behind an appliance storę. With these tools, I built the mother of all playhouses—an arched doorway, Windows on each wali that opened and closed, a duct-taped pitched roof, and makeshift curtains sloppily sewn from outgrown clothes. Little paintings adorned each wali, due mostly to the fact that I was so intrigued by the eff ects I could get with crayon on cardboard.
