Using thc correct method of casting on and off is important, whethcr it is at thc start of a piece of knitting, adding or removing stitchcs part way through or finishing off.
This simple method of casting on needs two needles. Begm by makmg a slip knot about 6in (15cm) from the end of the yarn and slip it on to a needle held m your left hand.Thts method produces a loose cast on edge. ideał for lace fabncs where a hard edge is not necessary.
1 Insert the nght-hand needle into the slip knot as though to knit it and wrap the yarn around the tip.
2 Puli a new loop through but do not slip the strtch off the left-hand needle.
3 Place the loop on to the left-hand needle as shown by mserting the left-hand needle into the front of the loop from nght to left as shown.
4 Insert thc nght-hand needle (as though to knrt) into the stitch just madę and wrap the yarn around the tip. Puli a new loop through and place it on to the left-hand needle.
Repeat step 4 until you have cast on the required numbcr of stitches.
Work the same as knitting on but instead of gomg into a stitch the needle goes between stitches. It should be worked quite loosely so the needle slips between stitches easily. This produces a rope-like edge used when working buttonholes where stitches are cast off on one row and cast on agam on the next row (see page 69).
Knitting on and Cable cast on... These two methods are also used for casting on stitches at the beginning of a row. which usualły happens in shaping a garmenl
Cast on two stitches using the knitting on method. Insert the nght-hand needle between the first and second stitches and wrap the yarn round the tip. When the new loop is pulled through between the stitches. place it on to the left-hand needle as for knitting on step 3.
