[ ADVANCED BINDING (CASTING) OFF

Picot bind (cast) off

This is a pretty. decorative fmish used when the bind (cast) off edge is part of the design, for example across the top of a pocket or around a collar.

1    Using the simple brnd (cast) off method cast off two stitches (see page 20).

2    Slip the stitch on the nght-hand needle back to the left-hand needle and. using the cable cast on method. cast on two stitches (see left).

3    Bind (cast) off four stitches. These are the two stitches just cast on and the next two stitches of the bind (cast) off edge.

Seam bind (cast) off

This is used to join two edges with the same number of stitches. It is often used for shoulder seams where the stitches have been left on stitch holders.You need three

1    Slip each set of stitches on to a needle. place together with right sides facing and hołd in the left hand.

2    Insert the third (right-hand) needle through both sets of stitches and draw a loop through. knrttmg the stitches together. Repeat for the next set of two stitches.

Using the simple bind (cast) off method (see page 20), bind (cast) off stitches on the right-hand needle.

You should always bind (cast) off m the same stitch that you are using for the mam fabnc. On a knit row. you knit all the stitches when you bind (cast) off and on a purl row you purl all the stitches when you bind (cast) off. To cast off in nb. you must knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches of the rib. If you are working a pattern of cable stitches or lace. you would bind (cast) off m pattern; agam knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until only one stitch remains on the nght-hand needle. Cut the yam. puli it through the last stitch and draw up tightly.

The picots can be spaced wider apart by bmding (casting) off five or morę stitches.

To fmish...

With nght sides together the bind (cast) off seam will be inside the garment; with wrong sides facing it will be a decorative seam on the outside as shown above.
