Mounts

Simple bars

1132    CUS73 acc. no. 300. (context IV, 55) ceramic phase 9 fig 133 & colour pl 5D

Six surviving solid mounts; fronts brass (backs ‘gunmetal’ - this probably includes solder - all tested, (AML); each between 5x7.5 and 6.5x8mm; central hole, and a groove having hatching, possibly punched, along each edge; on leather girdle no. 2; some roves survive. Minor variations between individual mounts are readily apparent.

Published by Henig (1974, 199-200 fig 42 no. 238).

1133    LUD82    307    (1046)    9    fig 133

Two solid mounts, each 4x8mm, with a single rivet, on one of two lengths of leather girdle no. 3.

1134    CUS73 225 (1,12) 9 fig 30

Three solid, D-section mounts, brass (AML, one tested), varying between 4.5x9 and 5x8.5mm, each with a single rivet; set on a silk strap - see p 48 (fig 30, top). The absence of further holes in the piece with the three mounts shows that the mounts did not continue on the surviving portion.

1135    CUS73    859    (I, 12)    9

Twelve surviving solid mounts, each between 4x9 and 5.5xl0.5mm, brass and gunmetal (AML, five tested), with a groove having (?)punched triangles along each edge, on two lengths of leather strap, totalling 220 x llmm (both tom off at the ends, possibly original-ly joined together), and holes indicating the loss of perhaps five morę mounts. Minor variations between individual mounts are readily apparent.

Published by Henig (1974, 199-200, fig 42 no. 239).

The mounts on the four preceding straps appear, from the varied angles of the sides and from a broken lip at that point (particularly evident in no. 1132), to have been cut from longer bars.

1136    SWA81    3428    (2141)    9    fig 133

3xl4mm; sheeting; rivets missing.

1137    SWA81    5095    (2051)    9    fig 133

5.5x 16mm; sheeting; central ridge; edges and one end curve towards the back; one rivet survives.

1138    SWA81    603    (2065)    9    fig    133

4xl7mm; solid; D-section; one rivet survives, with lead/tin solder; cut from a longer bar.

1139    SWA81    925    (2050)    9    fig    133

Ten surviving sheet-brass (AML) mounts (holes indicate the loss of six morę), each 5xl7mm, the rivets having roves, on three lengths of leather strap, totalling c.410xl6mm (tom off at ends - two definitely join, the third probably did).

1140    SWA81    416    (2018)    9

Imprints from at least six lost (?sheeting) mounts, each 5x18+mm on leather strap 125x22mm (cut at one end, tom off at the other); two rivets survive; four mounts seem to have been set in pairs, the other two singly.
