2.12.2A. Therapy for the levator scapulae.

Starting Position: P: Supine; head and neck in fuli ventral and left lateral flexion and left rotation; shoulders at edge of head of couch; right arm fully flexed aboveheadand abductedtowardshead;elbow flexed approximately 90°. T: Standing at head of couch with chest supporting right side of P’s head.

Grip: T’s left hand grips dorsal side of P’s neck. P's head and neck are stabilized between T's left arm and thorax. P's right elbow against T's abdomen. T’s right hand grips dorsal-lateral side of P’s upper arm and shoulder.

Procedurę: Using this grip. T applies traction to P's neck while leaning abdomen against P's elbow. T's right hand then moves P's shoulder gradually and maximally in a caudal and dorsal direction.

Stimulation of Antagonists: T retains grip. T then asks P to move further in the direction of stretching, and resists that movement with right hand to stimulate P's antagonists.

Notę: Avoid any movements of P's head and neck other than the prescribed traction applied.
