4.5.2.
Therapy for the extensor pollicis brevis.
Starting Position: P: Supine or sitting; elbow at approximately 90° flexion; forearm fully pronated with wrist in neutral position; thumb against palm, in fuli opposition and flexion at all joints. T: Standing facing P’s right side.
Grip: T's right hand grips P’s hand and thumb from the volar side, palm-to-palm, and holds P's thumb fully opposed and fiexed in all joints. T's left hand stabilizes P’s forearm just above the wrist.
Fig. 54 a. Starting Position.
Procedurę: Using this grip, T gradually and maximally ulnar and dorsal flexes at P’s wrist while fully pronating P’s forearm.
Stimulation of Antagonists: T retains grip. T then asks P to move further in the direction of stretching, and resists that movement to stimulate P’s antagonists.
Notę; If the position of greatest restriction is attained with the wrist in volar flexion, then it is necessary to treat in that position.
