5.2.3.
Therapy for the lumbricales.
Starting Position: P: Supine or sitting; elbow flexed approximately 90°; forearm fully supinated; wrist in neutral position; MCP jointsfully extended; DIP and PIP joints fully flexed. T: Standing, left side against P’s right side.
Grip: T’s right hand grips all of P's fingers, holding them fully extended at the MCP joints and fully flexed at the DIP and PIP joints. T's left hand stabilizes P’s forearm just above the wrist.
Fig. 57 a. Starting Position.
Procedurę: Using this grip, T gradually and fully dorsallyflexes at P’s wrist.
Stimulation of Antagonists: T retains grip. T then asks P to move further in the direction of stretching, and resists that movement to stimulate P’s antagonists.
Notes: P’s flexed elbow can be supported against the couch with Ts left hand gripping P’s hand at the volar side. This enables T to use both hands to obtain maximal stretching.
Stretching the lumbricales individually, one at a time, is most effective.
