movement of the carved moulding. Set down about 1.5mm (*/i6in) around the leaf using gouges which fit rhe shapcs, usually Nos. 3 and 5. The wood is then cut away around che leaf to that depth, interfering as little as possible with the carved moulding.

If the moulding is large enough the surface of the leaf may bc modelled slightly by running a shallow gouge back from the tips of the lobes, curving towards the base of the leaf.

The resulting ridges enliven the carving. There are morÄ™ elaborate treatments which can be sought out and copied. If the moulding is thick enough it will be possible to take a rebate. Otherwise, one or morÄ™ mouldings may be glued to a sub-frame having a stronger joint than a mitrÄ™.

If you practise thesc mouldings you will produce not only useful pieces but also do wonders for your speed, control and confidence.
