remcmber wherc thc mistake happened. The beginner may also fail to eliminatc traccs of the square bÅ‚ock because the profiles are cut at right anglcs. With a margin for crror all around the carver can develop forms if they appear to go wrong.

You must remcmber that what you have drawn is only a silhouette. In the case of this deer, for instance, the lcngth of the head as it appears in thc drawn outline is less than its true lengrh. The right ear occupies morÄ™ of the silhouette than the lcft. The tips of the nose and left ear are as elose to the side of thc bÅ‚ock as the left flank.

MorÄ™ about the Square Look

It is true that sometimes a square form can have charm. I illustrate this with an cxamplc carved by a student who I bclieve had copied from drawings in a book (Fig 11.7). The one drawing which would havc heiped him give it depth was the top view (Fig 11.8). What redccms thc carving is
