Always sand along the grain, using rhe finest paper that works. The paper musi bc used wrapped around a Firm rubbing błock to prcvent the blurring of the edges of the letters. If you take much off the surface the shapcs of the letters will be diflfercnt.

Lcttering in wood is both useful and an art form. It is also an enormous benefit, whether or not you intend to make carving your profession, in what it teaches about design, about self-criticism and about physical control.
