ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dick Onians, bom in 1940 in a house fuli of books, folk carvings and other sculpture, spent his childhood climbing crees, reading and whittling. He read Classics and English ac Cambridge, took his PGCE ac London Univcrsiiy and taught English and Latin at Dudley Boys’ Grammar School for three years. He then studicd Woodcarving ac The Cicy and Guilds of London Art School under the latc William Wheeler. Erom 1968 he taught English and sculpture part-time while establishing himself as a sculptor in wood and stone. In 1978 he returned to the City and Guilds Art School to teach part-time on its unique courses in traditional wood and stone carving. He is now the Senior Woodcarving Tutor therc. In 1992 hc pioneered the formal parr-rime Creative Studies course in woodcarving for the City and Guilds Instituce, which he teaches at Missenden Abbey, Buckinghamshire.

Hc also teaches ac many other collcges near his home in Hertfordshirc and around the countty. He is a regular contributor to Woodcarving magazine and is an associate of the Royal Sociecy of British Sculptors. Alrhough versatile as a sculptor he prefers to carve his own abstract shapcs in wood and stone. He has exhibited widely in one-man and group exhibitions, and his work is in private collections around che world.
