## WARNING ## This mod is simple but will change your antenna permantently. It will not ruin the antenna but it will make it more versatile in another way. Please read this mod very carefully, then decide. Pictures are included in the Photos section: Telescopic... The ATAS comes with a 1m long whip, which is not ideal when it has to be taken apart or when it has to fit in luggage. Since I use my ATAS- 120 for portable use, the long whip was not the best solution. When looking at the antenna, I discovered a way of attaching a telescopic whip. Most whips have a center hole in the bottom with 2.5 mm thread in it. I tried to put a bolt in it, cut off the head and I put this end into the head of the antenna (had to drill a bit wider). Then I tightened the two screws on the side and there was my antenna with telescopic whip. The only disadvantage was that I had to carry the tool to unscrew the screws and the whip was not really stable. 1. Drill the hole in the head to 3.2mm 2. Cut 4mm thread into this hole. 3. Repeat step 1 and 2 for the telescopic whip 4. Screw a 4mm bolt into a nut, cut off the head and unscrew the cut- off end through the nut so the thread is clear. 5. Put the cut-off end into the whip and use a little bit of Lock- Tight 6. Screw the whip on to the ATAS and voila... This mod is simple, you could have thought of it yourself. The only problem might be the whip, which is edeal for mobile use. When you know someone who can weld with high-frequency welding machines, he or she can weld the whip onto a 4mm bolt. Leaving the head on the bolt, makes the ATAS waterproof. In this way you can either use the telescopic or flexible whip whatever the application asks. Good luck and nice DX.
