his tutorial, youVe going to learn about my personal way of handling and combining traditional mediums to create great effects
detailled and colourful artwork. Enjoy it!:]
As traditional artist you can choose from a lot of different tools and mediums to work with which allows you to try out many differnt combinations and make lots of experience with them , i.e. what effects they create. The big pile of tools to choose from and the per: of usage makes the art and style of traditional artists unique.
These are my personal favourites among art mediums and the ones I used to create the drawing featured in this tutorial: T
u , m |M, . . K2 says: It doesn't matter what tools you use,
but it does matter HOW you use them. I have seen artist using normal IKEA pencils with a children's watercolour set and the result was breathtaking!
COPIC Markers
The best markers with the largest color palette. However they're really expensive
Various colors of bleedproof fineliners
For outlining your drawings, of course
Faber Castell Polychromos
High quality colored pencils For coloring * great in combination with markers or watercolours
Opaque white/ white acrylics
Cives your drawing the ,kick‘. Great for detailling and light effects
Additional mediums
[Ethanol for the non-freaks] - great for creating a base for clouds or scales
Crackling medium, which creates a great crackling texture
K2 says: Which paper you shall use?
My personal favourite is cardstok which is great for working with markers and doesn‘t make them loose a lot of ink.
Other papers I recommend:
- bristol: great for working with colored pencils
- watercolor paper: for nuclear colors of course
[insert trollface here]
Glazing medium, which is great for creating color shemes like for an underwater theme etc.
K2 says: Follow the arrows or else you shall not pass!
2.1 Go on with using morę colors for painting the background.
It doesn‘t need to be exact and look like a finished background already.
1. Sketch your drawing. I recommend using pencils with a diffemt hamdness for this step.
W 2. Outline your drawing and erase the pencil lines. r Afterwards paint the basie background colors of your drawing. I'm using markers for this but watercolors would be an alternative.
K2 says: Sometimes it helps noting down the colors you used in case you need them again for fixing something.
3. Take some soft and frayed brushes in different sizes (traditional japanese brushes being the best and your ethanol/lsopropanol (optimally 100%) for the next step.
4.1 Use the sprinkling-alcohol-technique again and create 4. Do the dragon‘s basie colors with markers and shade it roughly, the base for the dragon's scales. The morę little alcohol bubbles
you have the morę detailled will the scales be. J
3.1 dunk your brush into the alcohol and sprinkle your drawing by tapping your fingers on the brush to create some bubble-like texture. For larger bubbles, simply dap your brush on j the paper.
5 Ge- some beer orwódka K2 says: As longas you don‘t drink the ethanol, or suddenly think that politics is cool, everything isfine
Better see a doctor if any fo these things happen.
6. Now let*s start with detailling the dragon. Start with 6.2 Make the picture look morę deep with using black and white colored pencils.

Also, add morę color shemes and contrast Afterwards, use a smali brush and your white \y adding different colors (i.e. blue/red/green) to the main ones you create acrylic color and put tiny strokes and dots where light effects should be and smudge

7.3 Use white acylics again for painting the light effects on the fur and every single scalę and smudge them again with your finger. Repeat this until you think it looks good.
7.2 Create morę shadings with a black 7-1 Add morę details by using diffemt colors and 7- Now onto detailling scales. First, use a dark colored pencil and stronger colors shading tones of the base color. use a white colored pencil (not black!) and draw the scales'

K2 says: Fur does not always go into the same direction! Create a dynamie effect with Crossing the single hairs and ake them flow into different directions.
: - For making trees and branches look dynamie l‘m always using many different colors additionaly to the usual brown.
- Also, for creating morę details, and this works with almost everything, just add random white and black strokes to your drawing, as you can see well in the closeup.
Your scanned picture may look like the one on the left: like if there was a ghost sleeping inside the scanner.
With the following steps you can easily erase this ghost in Photoshop.
1. Open your file *> crop the picture with the „crop tool'1
2. Go to image -> automatic tonę / automatic color (this step is not necessary of you prefer doing it all manually)
3. For adjusting the brightness and the contrast go to image *> adjustments -> levels and change the levels until it looks good to you.
4. And now something quite nasty: Adjusting colors, which you need
to do manually.
First, select the „eyedropper tool" H and choose the color you want to have fixed.
Then go to
image -> adjustments -> replace color and play around with the slidebars until you're satisfied with your
drawing's look.
6.+7. As Additional steps you may erase some spots which magically always appear on a scan unless the sanneer likes you. Also I prefer resizing my work.
The finał result should look about like this then:
That‘s it! I hope this tutorial helped you, even if it‘s only a little.
But I want to add that even if it looks like as if drawing is easy for me it has actually been tons and tons of
work over years and it‘s been very frustrating at times.
But if you don't give up and keep practising, studying and beeing proud for what you‘re creating, you'11 become, and that's what I promise you,
an amazing artist one day, surrounded by people who you will tell the same words.
