Metonymy is a cognitive process in which one conceptual entity, the vehicle, provides mental access to another conceptual entity, the target, within the same cognitive domain.
As Taylor puts it,
the essence of metonymy resides in the possibility of establishing connections between entities which co-occur within a given conceptual structure. [...] The entities need not be contiguous in any spatial sense. (1995: 123-124).
In fact one can draw an analogy between events like the one described above and speech acting, which can be defined as performing actions via utterances (cf. Yule 1996a: 47).
[Sjpeech acts are commonly given morę specific labels, such as apology, complaint, compliment, invitation, promise, or request. These (...) terms apply to the speaker’s communicative intention in producing an utterance. The speaker normally expects that his or her intention will be recognized by the hearer. (ibid.: 47- 48).
According to John Searle (1975: 64), politeness is the chief motivation for indirectness in directive speech acts.
