A font program written in the PostScript language is a program that is an organized collection of procedures describing character shapes. Elemerjts of this collection are accessed by character codę with the show operator, as described in the PostScript Language Reference Manuał. Different font programs contain different amounts of diverse information, this information is collected into a dictionary. The dictionary contains reguired and optional entries, and is the data object that the PostScript interpreter ref- erences for all fontoperations.
Every Type 3 (user-defined) font program requires a font dictionary entry namcd BuildChar, as described in the PostScript Language Reference Manuał. The value associated with th is n am e is a procedurę that the PostScript interpretercalls whenever it needs to have a character built. The Type 3 BuildChar procedurę is free to use \vhatever method it chooses to supply the PostScript interpreter with graphics commands to paint the character associated with a character codc. Gcnerally, BuildChar proccdurcs operate by selecting a particular procedurę for building a character from an array or from a dictionary of sucli procedures stored in the font dictionary.
