At engine loads of less than 40% the display will show the last values used (constant readout). % If there is audible knocking and no perceptible ignition timing retardation, increase the engine speed to above 3500 rpm for 5 seconds in order to activate the knock sensor fault recognition (diagnosis) function. % If there is a significant difference between the ignition timing retardation value for one of the cylinders and the values for the other Strona 2 z 7 cylinders, the following faults are possible: - Loose ancillaries - Corrosion on plug connector - Engine damage (e.g. oil burning because of defective piston) % If the ignition timing retardation values for all the cylinders are high, the following faults are possible: - Corrosion on plug connector - Wrong tightening torque (should be 20 Nm) - Open circuit in wiring - Knock sensor defective - Loose ancillaries - Poor-quality fuel (less than RON 95) Display Group 16 - Knock control: Read measured value block 16 ! % Indicated on display 0...6800 -20...+40 0.0...72.0 0...10 ms rpm A/BTDC cr/shaft Total ignition timing retardation, cylinders 1 to 6 Ignition timing Engine load Engine speed Notes on Display Group 16: % As soon as knocking is detected, the knock control must retard the ignition timing in order to prevent damage to the engine. % However, retardation of the ignition timing increases the temperature of the exhaust emissions, which means there is a risk of overheating in the catalytic converter. % To prevent this overheating, the mixture is enriched when the total ignition timing retardation exceeds about 10 cr/shaft at full throttle. This has the effect of reducing the temperature of the exhaust emissions. Display Group 17 - Knock sensor: Read measured value block 17 ! % Indicated on display 620...860 0.50...1.40 0.50...1.40 0.50...1.40 rpm V V V Knock sensor voltage signal, cylinder 3 Knock sensor voltage signal, cylinder 2 Knock sensor voltage signal, cylinder 1 Idling speed shown in steps of 40 rpm Four-wheel drive: 620...740 rpm Front-wheel drive: 740...860 rpm Display Group 18 - Knock sensor: Read measured value block 18 ! % Indicated on display 620...860 0.50...1.40 0.50...1.40 0.50...1.40 rpm V V V Knock sensor voltage signal, cylinder 6 Knock sensor voltage signal, cylinder 5 Knock sensor voltage signal, cylinder 4 Idling speed shown in steps of 40 rpm Four-wheel drive: 620...740 rpm Front-wheel drive: 740...860 rpm Notes on Display Groups 17 and 18: % If no faults are found in the knock sensor or in the wiring or connectors, check the engine for loose ancillaries or damage (see Display Groups 12, 13, 14 and 15). % At high engine speeds the displayed signal voltage for the knock sensors can reach 5.1 Volt. % If there is more than 50 % difference between the smallest and largest knock sensor signal, the cause could be corrosion on the Strona 3 z 7 connector. Display Group 19 - Torque reduction (automatic gearbox): Read measured value block 19 ! % Indicated on display 0...6800 0.0...10.0 0...410 -100...300 rpm ms Nm Nm Actual engine torque Required (specified) engine torque Engine load Engine speed Notes on Display Group 19: % This display group shows how much the ignition timing is reducing the engine torque during gearshifts in order to achieve a smoother transition between gears. % Because the signal is only brief the V.A.G 1551 or 1552 is not always able to detect the ignition timing retardation, and therefore this may not appear on the display. % Display zone 3 shows the engine torque required for the gearshift (specified engine torque). % Display zone 4 shows the actual engine torque (torque at clutch). % Testing ignition timing retardation during gearshifts => Page 24-106. Display Group 20 - Operating conditions: Read measured value block 20 ! % Indicated on display Neutral A/C-High Compr.ON rpm Gear engag A/C-Low Compr.OFF Air conditioner compressor ON/OFF On vehicles with no air conditioner the display will always read "Compr.OFF". Air conditioner / rear window heating Selector lever in Neutral or with gear engaged On vehicles with manual gearboxes the display will always read "Neutral". Engine speed shown in steps of 10 rpm Note on display zone 3: % On vehicles with four-wheel drive the idling speed will increase if the rear window heating or the air conditioner is switched on. On vehicles with front-wheel drive and no air conditioner the idling speed will increase if the rear window heating is switched on. In each case, however, this increase will only occur when the accelerator pedal is depressed briefly (blipped). % A/C-High = rear window heating switched on, or air conditioner requires high hot/cold air output A/C-Low = rear window heating / air conditioner switched off Display Group 21 - Operating conditions for lambda control: Read measured value block 21 ! % Indicated on display ctrl.OFF rpm ms C ctrl.ON Lambda control OFF/ON Coolant temperature Engine load Engine load shown in steps of 40 rpm Notes on Display Group 21: % If the engine is started at a temperature of less than 15 C (intake air temperature), the engine control unit will not engage the lambda control until the coolant temperature reaches 55C. % If the engine is started at a temperature of more than 15 C (intake air temperature), the lambda control will cut in when the system recognises that the lambda probe is functioning. % When the lambda control is switched off the engine runs according to a map stored in the control unit. Display Group 22 This display group is for factory use only. The display values are not relevant for fault-finding in the workshop. Note on display zones 1, 2, 3 and 4: If the display still does not show the specified value even after the basic setting has been performed, check the wiring for open circuits or short circuits and also check the plug connections for dirt or corrosion before fitting a new throttle valve control part. The engine control unit informs the ABS/ASR control unit of the actual engine torque. If wheel slip is detected, the ABS/ASR control Strona 5 z 7 unit calculates the required (specified) engine torque and sends a corresponding signal to the engine control unit instructing it to reduce the engine torque. The torque reduction takes place in 12 separate stages. A feedback signal indicating the actual engine torque then informs the ABS/ASR control unit how much the engine torque has been reduced. Notes continued: % When the engine is cold (coolant temperature less than 30 C), small torque reduction stages (1 to 2) are achieved by retarding the ignition timing and large reduction stages (3 to 12) are achieved by briefly shutting off individual injectors. % When the engine is warm (coolant temperature more than 45 C), the engine torque is reduced both by briefly shutting off individual injectors and by retarding the ignition timing. Notes on display zones 3 and 4: % Display zone 3 shows the required engine torque as calculated by the ABS/ASR control unit (specified engine torque). % Testing specified engine torque signal from ABS/ASR control unit=>Page 24-105. % Display zone 4 shows the actual engine torque (torque at clutch). % Testing signal for actual engine torque=>Page 24-104. % When the traction control system (ASR) is not active (i.e. when no torque reduction is required by the ASR), display zone 3 will show a value that is considerably higher than the maximum possible engine torque value of 300 Nm. This is a purely theoretical value (up to 410 Nm) which has been deliberately set very high for safety purposes in order to make a clear distinction between it and the actual engine torque. This ensures that the engine control unit will always register the need to reduce the torque. % The values in display zones 3 and 4 will gradually settle at the same level during the period in which the traction control system (ASR) is active.
