3 AN UNPUBLISHED DOCUMENT AB OUT THE GREEK REYOLUTTON 723

Another important element for the identity of the receiyer is given by Em. Xanthos himself in his letter; he writes : “You, my friend and brother, gave your vote and influenced ‘Haritoyritos’10 to give the fuli power of action in the secret revolutionary organisation of Ismail and others of the sort in Bessarabia to Kalamatianos and Papadopoulos” u.

The words of Em. Xanthos show us that the letter in ąuestion is addreBsed to a man, who was close to D. Ipsilantis and had power of influence on him, when the latter decided to create the secret revolutionary organizations (Ephories) in Bessarabia.

Another very important element is given by Em. Xanthos on page 6 of the letter in ąuestion; he writes: “but, you know that I was waiting for Ioannis Varvakis’ monetary contribution... ”12.

In connection with this monetary contribution mentioned in Em. Xanthos’ letter, we also know from a letter written by D. Ipsilantis in Kissinef on the 13th of April 1821 to Em. Xanthos, that the latter had to wait in Kissinef for this monetary contribution and after receiving it to leave immediately for Triest. There Em. Xanthos was supposed to meet D. Ipsilantis and the other Greek revolutonaries and leave together with them for Greece13.

Speaking about this contribution and about D. Ipsilantis’ order from the 13th of April 1821, Em. Xanthos mentions that the receiver of the letter in que stion “fenows” everything about it. So we can conclude that the receiver was very familiar with D. Ipsilantis and a yery important person in the hierar chy of the secret revolutionary organisation, or other-wise he could not have known the most secret orders and activities of the Philiki Hetairia.

In addition to all these, a further element completes the above mentioned facts. Em. Xanthos writes : “you, my friend... you are still yery young. ..”14, which means that the receiver was younger than the author of the letter.

Another very important element for the identity of the receiver can be found on pages 11—12 of the letter in ąuestion. The author writes : “I am waiting for the orders of Haritowrytos and the other leaders from there,- if they think I am able of any actiwity, because, I think, it is not worth coming there, not knowing what opinion about me I shall find there...”.

It is well known that Em. Xanthos using the pseudonym ‘Harito-yrytos’ refers to D. Ipsilantis. It is also known that, when the letter was written (October 1821), D. Ipsilantis was established in Peloponnesus and so we can doubtlessly conclude that the place of destination of the letter in ąuestion was also Peloponnesus.

The last element which contributes decisively to the revelation of the receiver’s identity is the fact that, as Em. Xanthos himself mentions in the letter, the correspondence between him and the receiver had been interrupted sińce the end of April 1821. Em. Xanthos wi-ites : “I have
