Summary. — Barbara McClintock carried out a largc genetic and cytogcnetic work on maize. In demonstrating the rclation between the breakage - fusion - bridge chromatide cycle (BFB cycle) in the endospcnn tissue of the caryopse and the tnultiple form of varicgałion on the same caryopse, she pointed out a new aspect oj the gene function, the State of the mutable locus. The progressiun of the knowlcdges about these mutable loci hyis realized in three stages. First the aut hor found the genetic controlling element of the Activator (Ac) - Dissociator (Ds) family, the later element operating by deletion. Then she discovered that Ds induces mutation on the gene in which ii is inserted, and makes it mutable. Finally, she identified numerous other mutable loci of the Suppressor - Mutator (Spm) family. The commun point of the mutable loci is that they are controlled by a regulator element which in tum Controls the operator element, inserted ncar or in the locus of the gene that mutates. Both can be transposed. The demonstration is donc by the observalion of modification in fuctorial groups. Thus Barbara McClintock discovercd one of the possible mechanisms of spontaneous mutation. Her work has been now confirmed by rccent data of molecular genetics.
