to hołd the next International Conference in London and Cambridge was accepted. Thrce sub-committecs dealt with amend-ments to the Statutes, with the bibliography and with the ques-tion of the dictionary (see Minutes of the Meetings, vol. III, p. 87).
Conference Sessions
Ali the Sessions were plenary meetings and were held under a Chairman and a Vice-Chairman whose names are given at the beginning of each Session.
The first Session was opened by Prof. Terzaghi who also delivered a lecture on “Fifty Years of Subsoil Exploration”. The following Sessions were preceded by lectures which dealt with problems concerning the host country in accordance with a practice introduced at Rotterdam.
The discussion proper for each Session was introduced by the General Reporter who presented a brief survey of the work carried on sińce the Second Conference.
The majority of the discussions were read; towards the closure of the Sessions however, discussion became spontaneous and ended in a free exchange of views.
Opening and Finał Sessions
The opening Session took place in thc Kongrcsshaus at Zurich on 17th August 1953. Prof. Meyer-Peter, President of the Swiss Organizing Committee, and Dr. Philippe Etter, President of the Swiss Confederation, welcomed the Conference Members. Then Prof. H. Favre, Rector of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, confcrred the honorary degree of doctor of technical science of the Institute upon Prof. Terzaghi, who thanked him in reply (see speeches, voI. III, p. 69).
The finał Session was held at Lausanne on 27th August. It comprised two generał lectures by Mr. Peltier and Prof. Stucky and a closing speech by Prof. A. Stucky, Director of the Institute of Technology of Lausanne University. The meeting was foLlowed by a banquet during which Mr. H.Genet, Municipal Councillor of Lausanne, delivered a farewell ad-dress and Prof. Terzaghi declared theThird Conference closed (see speeches, voI. III, p. 69).

Languages, interpretation et proc£s-verbaux
Les debats, tant ceux du Comite executif queceuxdes seances proprement dites, furent traduits soit en franęais, soit en an-glais (interpretation consecutive) par deux interpretes profes-sionnels (Mme E. Gern, Zurich, et M. W. Zwerner, Genćve). Ceux-ci furent secondes, pour ce qui est de la traduction des termes techniques, par deux ingenieurs, le Dr P. Habib de Paris et M. W. Schrievcr d’Ottawa. Le Comite d’organisation tient a exprimer sa gratitude a ces deux ingenieurs pour leur precieuse collaboration. La discussion fut enregistree sur ban-des (electric wire recorder); apres les seances, les discours furent dactylographies et remis aux auteurs pour revision. Ce systeme ne donna pas entiere satisfaction. Le Comite d’organi-sation, s’appuyant sur les experiences acquises, croit qu’il y aurait interet a ce que les orateurs remettent leurs manuscrits aux interpretes avant la seance et deposent un exemplaire re-vise de leur contribution au Secretariat apres la clóture du Congres.
