GEOMORPHOLOGICAL MAP OF THE POLISH LOWLAND
ON 1 : 50,000 SCALĘ
The Detailed Geomorphological Map of The Polish Lowland is based on the generał principles of geomorphological mapping in Poland, laid down by the Committee of the Geomorphological Map with M. Klimaszewski as chairman. These principles have been established at numerous meetings dealing with the Detailed Geomorphological Map, organized by the Division of Scientific Research of the Polish Geographical Society in 1950-1953. However, the particular character of the lowland relief with its divergent multitude of forms of deposition suggests a different pattern for this map, different from that used for other regions of Poland. A picture of this geomorphological-cartogra-phical diversity of the Polish Lowland may be seen in the geomorphological map of the Bydgoszcz region on 1 : 25,000 scalę, presented by R. Galon in 1947 on the session of the Polish Geographical Society at Toruń. The systematic geomorphological mapping of the area of the Polish Lowland was started in 1950, being carried out by the geographical centres at Łódź, Poznań, Toruń and Warszawa. The Toruń centre of geomorphological mapping which later was converted into the Department of Lowland Geomorphology and Hydrography of the Institute of Geography of PAN (Polish Academy of Sciences) was, and continues to be, the coordinator of geomorphological mapping with regard to the remaining centres; so far, the cost of both field work and printing is being covered by the Institute of Geography of PAN. The work of geomorphological mapping is being done on 1 :25,000 scalę, whereas publishing of the mapped sheets (arranged in the new international division) is done on 1 :50,000 scalę.
Similarly as the maps prepared by the management of the Cracow centre, the Detailed Geomorphological Map of the Polish Lowland distinguishes the following relief features:
a) the morphometric features of land forms (relative heights of morainic hummocks or erosional escarpments, inclinations of slopes within a moraine plateau, etc.)
b) the morphographic features of the relief (fiat moraine plateaus, morainic hummocks, esker ridges, outwash plains, etc.)
