Shani’s account is paralleled by a diary entry written by Vatuk (1985), who recalls an actual incident in which the hijras came to his door in Meerut: hijre ate hal ve besarm hal unki koi izzat nahi ve kisi ke prań uttardayi nahl unki zaban par koi niyamtran nahl atah ve har avastha me vijyi hai ‘The hijras came. They are shame-less. They have no honor. They are answerable to no one. Their tongue has no re-straint. They are victorious in every exchange’.
