The flexiblc zinr-»ilver ehloridr bat-trries, ubo ralled “elertrie rdit,” were drvcloped by the Chemieal Division of AerojeMieneral Corporation, Azu*u, Cal-ifornia in eooperation with the U. S. Army Signal Researrh and Deve!opment Laboratory, loeated at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.

The batteries, whirh are aetivated when imntersed in water, ran be easily wound on drums with the military roni-munieations rabie for whirh they are primarily drsigned.

In use, a batlrry is plared next to earh repcater. These are splieed into the rabie every mile to boost voiee or telctypewriler signals. The re|>eaters, whirh are transistorized, are also flex-ible and easily roli off the rabie drum on whirh they are wound.

The batteries obtain their flexibility through segmented eonstrurtion. Spool-shaped links of silver rhloride are sepa-rated by rubber rings front zinr seg-ments. A wire whirh spirals the length of the battery is employed lo interron* nert the seetions.

The basie battery size is •>£ of an ineh in diameter and 30 inehes long. These deliver a required five milliamperes ron-tinuously at one volt for a year. Life run be extended by using Iwo or ntorr of the 30-inrh batteries or by making them lurger. They ran be built to any size, willi u delivery ratę of morę than 40 wattdiours per pound.    -{Jg-
