THE MONTH ON THE Al

monthly feature by John Atlaway, G3FKM*

QSL cards have been objects of contention for many years, and with rapidly incrcasing postał charges the point seems to have been passcd whcrc they should only bc sent to those who ask for them. G3FBA reports that he has to dcstroy many incoming cards which are not wantcd by some of thosc for whom hc acts so compctcntly as sub-managcr. Thcsc havc been sortcd by G2MI and posted to him at considerable cost only to cnd in the wastc baskct. Would it not bc a good idea to say *‘no QSL” instcad of “PSLL”? Your scribc would gucss that this would rcducc unjustifiable expcnsc by at least haif.

It is freąucntly said that we either use or losc our bands. A lettor from VP2L1 says that the Ten-Ten Net of Southern Califomia is dotng a good job in stimulating interest in morę lOm a.m. working all over the world; membersbip is alrcady over 2000. We have a very wide allocaiion on this band, dx can be worked very easily with Iow power and smali aerials, and local contacts are liablc to be much morę pleasant than if they were carried out on 160m. Many readers no doubt will have a.m. equipment availablc, so why not join in the ftm and use it on ten? A very uscful specializcd news sheet is available in the form of QUAX (hcre is news of ten) which is available frora the editor, Alan Taylor, G3DME, **Alta-dena’\ South View Rd, Crowborough, Susscx, pricc 55p per annum. ($1.40, 5DM, or 15 mes for air mail despatch worldwide).

W. Habn, G3UOL (QTHR), is visiting Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, for the month of August and is anxious to contact any VE1 who would be prepared to let him operatc from his location (with operating permission baving been obtained of course). His QTH will be c/o Mr H. O. Gilliatt, PO Box 115, Annapolis Royal, NS, Canada.

Your scribe receives many rcąuests conccrning awards and QSL card checking and would likc to point out that the Society*s Awards Manager is Mr Chas Emary, G5GH, who deals with all awards matters other than those conncctcd with CQ magazine. Rules and application forms for awards listed in this cołumn can only bc supplied when this is spcci-fically mentioned.

Europcan stations hcard between October 1970 and’ 1971 — this shows 57 loggings of 28 UK stations! Thcse are: G3s CXX, EKE (?), IGW, 1RS, KM1, KYC, LIQ, LYW, MYI, OLB, OLI, RCE, RKJ, RPB, SED, TKF, TR, WXY, XTZ, G6BQ, G6XL (?), GM3s FXM/A, ITN, TKV, WDF, YCB (logged on ssb on 4 January), and GW3XJC. His rccciver is an HRO Senior, and he has one aerial 260ft long 5ft above ground level and another which is a 2ft squarc framc. This is an outstanding performance and George is to be sincerely congratulated.
