The Hollywood sign łn the hilb that linę the northem border of Los Angeles te a famous land mak recognized the world over. The whlte painted, 50 foot - high, sheet metal letters can be seen from great dtetances across the Los Angeles basin.
The sign was not constructed, as one migh suppcse, by the mov»e business as a means of cełebrabng the importance of Hollywood to this industry, instead, it was first constructed In 1923 as a means of advertłsing homes for sale In a 500- acre housing sub dwislon In a part of Los Angeles calledland "Hollywood land".
