Papier-mâché: simple and beautiful

1
Papier-mâché is a very simple art form which is very popular with primary school teachers. The only items necessary are old paper (newspaper is best) and some wallpaper paste.

2
Just take some paper and tear it into strips. You don't have to cut it carefully. Then add some wallpaper paste, form into desired shape and let them dry. This should be done slowly, not in an oven. When they are dry they go hard and can be cut and painted.

3
Papier-mâché is known wherever paper is known, which means, basically, everywhere. In Japan and India it has been used to decorate armour and in the Kashmir region and in Iran, decorative boxes are made from it.

4
In Europe and America, as well as for art, it has been used for practical purposes. Amazingly, in 1874, boat made from a papier-mâché sailed from New York to Florida and, in England, it was used in furniture manufacture. Almost anything that is now made of plastic was made of papier-mâché in the past.

a) What to do.

c) Where it started.

d) What you need.

e) Around the world.

Hi Ela,

I'm in London. I love it. It's much nicer than I expected. I work in an office in the centre but I live in a place called Tooting in south London. I get to work on the underground. It's packed in the mornings. Usually I have to stand. The strange thing is that no one talks. The only thing you can hear is the noise of the train. And no one looks at anyone else. They all read. Newspapers, magazines, books. Even the people standing up. Sometimes I think they are afraid of each other. Now, I always carry a book too but I still spend most of the time looking at other people.

Hope you're well,

Monika

Why save water?

Surely Britain is famous for its rain, so what is the problem? Well, surprisingly, there isn't so much water in Britain. In fact, we have less water per person than places such as Spain and Italy. In areas with the biggest population such as London and the south-east, this problem is even worse.

What can you do?

The average person in England uses 150 litres per day, so what can we do to cut down on this amount? Simple things such as switching off the tap while washing your teeth can save five litres. Mending a dripping tap can save 4 litres a day. Taking a shower instead of a bath saves a lot.

We need our water. Take care of it.

For more information see our website: www.water.government.co.uk
