I am very pleased to announce that the

Journal of

Pharmaceutical Sciences’ (JPharmSci) Editorial
Team has decided to dedicate a future issue of the
journal to Professor Michael J. Pikal and to the
science that he loved and fostered throughout his
professional career. This honor is being bestowed
on Professor Pikal because of his many significant
contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences.
These contributions are so numerous and so
significant that Professor Pikal is considered by
pharmaceutical scientists to be amongst the ‘‘true
giants’’ in the field. Professor Pikal’s contributions
to the pharmaceutical sciences will be summarized
in a Commentary to be published in this dedicated
issue of

JPharmSci.

Professor Pikal is currently the Pfizer Distin-

guished

Endowed

Chair

in

Pharmaceutical

Technology & Professor in the Department of
Pharmaceutics at the University of Connecticut.
During his long and productive career, Professor
Pikal’s research and teaching have impacted many
areas of the pharmaceutical sciences with parti-
cular emphasis on the freezing and freeze-drying
of drugs. This dedicated issue will include manu-
scripts from Professor Pikal’s former students,
postdoctoral fellows, visiting scientists and colla-

borators that contain new, original and novel
findings in these areas of the pharmaceutical
sciences.

I am pleased to announce that Steven L. Nail

(Baxter Pharmaceutical Solutions, LLC), John
F. Carpenter (University of Colorado Health
Sciences Center), Sheri Shamblin (Pfizer Global
Research & Development) and Gerhard Winter
(Ludwig Maximilians Universitat Munchen) have
agreed to be Guest Editors for the issue dedicated
to Professor Pikal. If you are interested in contri-
buting a manuscript to this dedicated issue, please
contact Dr. Nail, Dr. Carpenter, Dr. Shamblin or
Dr. Winter for more details. It is anticipated that
the Michael J. Pikal Dedicated Issue of

JPharmSci

will be published in mid-to-late 2009.
