Editorial
I am very pleased to announce that the Editorial
Team for the
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences
(
JPharmSci) has decided to dedicate a future issue of
the journal to Professor Akira Tsuji and to the science
that he has loved and fostered throughout his
professional career. This honor is being bestowed
on Professor Tsuji because of his numerous and
significant contributions to research, teaching and
service in the pharmaceutical sciences. These con-
tributions are so significant that Professor Tsuji is
considered by his peers to be one of the ‘‘true giants’’ of
modern pharmaceutical sciences. Professor Tsuji’s
contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences will be
summarized in a Commentary to be published in this
dedicated issue of
JPharmSci.
After retiring as Professor of Pharmaceutics in
2008, Professor Tsuji became Emeritus Professor and
Special Advisor at Kanazawa University. During his
long and very productive career, Professor Tsuji’s
research,
teaching
and
service
contributions
have impacted many areas of the pharmaceutical
sciences. Most recently his research has been focused
on membrane transporters in the intestinal mucosa,
blood–brain barrier, liver, kidney, and tumors
and their role in determining drug disposition. His
scientific approach to studying biological transpor-
ters, which was influenced significantly by his early
work in chemical kinetics, has spanned from living
organisms (e.g., animals and humans) to macro-
molecules (e.g., transporters) and from pharmacoki-
netics to structural biology and genetics. Therefore,
Professor Tsuji’s dedicated issue will include papers
in the areas of pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics,
pharmacoproteomics, drug delivery, and drug target-
ing. Since Professor Tsuji also made major contribu-
tions early in his career to physical pharmacy, in
particular chemical kinetics, and regulatory science,
papers in these areas of the pharmaceutical sciences
will also be included in his dedicated issue.
I am pleased to announce that Professors Tetsuya
Terasaki
(Tohoku
University),
Peter
Langguth
(Johannes
Gutenberg-University),
James
Polli
(University of Maryland) and Ikumi Tamai (Kana-
zawa University) have agreed to be Guest Editors for
the Akira Tsuji Dedicated Issue. If you are interested
in contributing a manuscript to this dedicated
issue, and thus honoring Professor Tsuji, please
contact Professor Terasaki (jps2011@mail.pharm.to-
hoku.ac.jp) for more details. It is anticipated that the
Akira Tsuji Dedicated Issue will be published in
September 2011.
