Potable Water Bunker System
1:36 PM
Potable Water Bunker System
Keep Potable Water & Drill Water bunker lines separate.
Do not combine the two into one bunker station
1:36 PM
Potable Water Hose Caps – Good Hygiene
• Always recap bunker hoses
• Keep spares as a stock item in the store

Flushing Point
Potable Bunkering – Flush Overboard
1:36 PM
Potable Bunkering – Flush Overboard
Why Flush over board ?
• Ensures any stagnant water left in the hose and pipework is
flushed overboard.
• Ensures any stagnant water from the Supply boat lines is
flushed overboard
• Offers the potential to flush any loose Biofilm that may be
growing in the hose overboard
1:36 PM
Potable Bunkering – Flush Overboard
Biofilm
– Better to flush Bacteria overboard than into the tanks !
Bunker Hoses can be
an ideal breading
ground for bacteria

Bunker Sampling
Why Should you sample when Bunkering ?
• Good Practice
• Sampling should prevent system contamination from Diesel or Sea water
What Tests should be carried out ?
• Visual check for rust or other contamination
• Smell – for diesel contamination
• Conductivity for sea water contamination
• Free Chlorine – to check whether water requires chlorination post bunkering &
to make sure you are not getting super chlorinated water.
Sampling & Testing MUST be carried out before transferring water
to the storage tanks

Bunker Water Chlorination
1:36 PM
Bunker Water Chlorination – Automatic Dosing Units
1:36 PM
Bunker Water Chlorination
Measure Free chlorine value pre bunkering and dose as required
Manual & Automatic Dosing will depend
• on the strength of the hypochlorite being used -> Age of the product
• Bacterial Contamination of System & Bunker Water
• Chemical contamination of System & Bunker Water – Rust , Nitrate, Ammonia
• Expect to Double Dose as a minimum i.e. use calculation to work out dosage for
1ppm as bacteria, contaminants & loss of strength will affect final outcome
1:36 PM
Bunker Water Chlorination
Bunkering always need More chlorine than expected due to
•
Aeration from pumping
•
stir up sediment
•
contact with contaminated walls, ladders etc
Expect to Double Dose as a minimum i.e. use calculation to work out dosage for 1ppm
1:36 PM
Manual Chlorination – Water maker & Bunkering
Dose into the tank when the tank is about 1/4 full to allow
the water to mix
If dosed via the sounding tube, Flush the sounding tube with
roughly 4 to 5 litres (1 gallon) of potable water to prevent
corrosion.

Dosing Spread sheet – Theoretical !
1:36 PM
Written Bunkering Procedure – Good Practice
Safety precautions to be taken
Step by step procedure including flushing, sampling & testing
Include rejection criteria
e.g smell or taste of diesel , high conductivity, solid material etc .
