A.. Jerusalem (also known as BlackBox)
Discovered in 1987, Jerusalem is one of the

earliest worms. It is also one of the most com-
monly known viruses deleting files. It’s execu-
ted on each Friday the 13th. Its name comes from
the city in which it was first detected. Jerusa-
lem is a variant of another virus that also deletes
files at random periods during the year (April
Fool’s Day and/or Friday the 13th depending on
the variant). While Jerusalem and its relatives
were quite common in their day, they became
less of a threat when Windows was introduced.

B.. Michelangelo
In 1991, thousands of computers were hit by

a new worm, one that was to be activated on the
artist Michelangelo’s birthday (March 6th). On
that day, the virus would overwrite the hard disk
of infected hosts.

Millions of computers were believed to be at

risk. After March 6th, however, it was realized
that the damage was minimal. Only 10,000 to
20,000 cases of data loss were reported.
Ironically, because of the media hype, the pe-
riod before March 6, 1992 became known as ”Mi-
chelangelo Madness,” with users buying anti-
virus software, some for the very first time.

C.. Melissa
In 1999, many users downloaded a file in a Use-

net discussion group, assuming that they were
getting free access to over 80 pornographic web-
sites. Little did they know that the file within

was responsible for mass-mailing thousands of
recipients and shutting down nearly the entire
Internet. The Melissa worm randomly inserted
quotes from The Simpsons TV show into docu-
ments on the host computer and deleted criti-
cal Windows files.

Melissa’s creator, David Smith from New Jer-

sey, was imprisoned for 20 months and fined
$5,000.

D.. I LOVEYOU
You may have gotten an email in 2000 with

the subject line ”ILOVEYOU.” If you deleted it,
you were safe from one of the most costly worms
in computer history. Ten percent of all Internet-
connected computers were hit and the net re-
sult was an estimated $8.7 billion in damages.
Onel A. de Guzman, a resident of the Philippi-
nes, had all charges dropped against him for cre-
ating the worm because there were no laws at
the time prohibiting the creation of computer
worms. Since then, the government of the Phi-
lippines has laid out penalties that include im-
prisonment for up to 3 years and a fine of at le-
ast 100,000 pesos (USD $2000).

always determined to get attention somehow.

Clever Hans the Math Horse

Wilhelm Von Osten lived in Germany in the

late 1800s. He was a high school mathematics
teacher and an amateur horse trainer. He was
a strong believer in phrenology – the theory that
one’s intelligence, character and personality
can be determined based on the shape of one’s
head. But it was his keen interest in animal in-
telligence that eventually brought him fame.

Von Osten firmly believed that humanity had

greatly underestimated the intelligence of ani-
mals. To test his theory, he decided to teach the
basics of mathematics to a cat, a horse, and a be-
ar. The cat was indifferent to his efforts, and the
bear tried to eat him, but the Arabian horse na-
med Hans showed real promise.

After some instruction, Hans learned to use

his leg to tap out numbers written on a blackbo-
ard. When Von Osten’s wrote a ”3” on the blac-
kboard, his pupil would respond with a tap-tap-
tap. Hans could do that for any number under
ten. Encouraged by this success, Von Osten tried
to train the horse in solving some basic arithme-
tic problems. Again, Hans learned quickly and
soon he was providing the correct answers to
a variety of mathematical problems.

Starting from 1891, Von Osten began para-

ding ”Clever Hans” all over Germany to show
off the horse’s mathematical talent. Hans’ free
exhibitions began drawing crowds of curious
onlookers. The clever horse did simple arith-
metic and answered questions about dates and
the time of day. He could even spell out the na-
mes of the people he knew. One tap with his leg
was an ‘A’, two taps – a ‘B’, and so on. Though
he made mistakes occasionally, Hans’ accura-
cy was found to be about 90%. Some compared
Hans’ mathematical skills to those of a fourte-
en-year-old.

Naturally there were many skeptics, parti-

cularly after the New York Times featured the
unusual horse in a front-page story. Germany’s
board of education decided to conduct an inde-
pendent investigation into Hans’ abilities, and
Von Osten agreed. He was a man of science, af-
ter all, and he knew that there was no fraud to
expose. The

Hans Commission

included two

zoologists, a psychologist, several school tea-
chers, and a circus manager. After long testing,
the commission concluded in 1904 that there
was no trickery involved and the horse’s talents
were genuine.

It was only when a famous psychologist Oskar

Pfungst took up the investigation that the my-
stery was explained. Pfungst made a series of
experiments that proved that the accuracy of
Hans’ responses was close to zero when the hor-
se couldn’t see the questioner or when the qu-
estioner didn’t know the right answer. The re-
searchers also found out that asking Hans que-
stions that he couldn’t answer lead to painful
horse-bites.

The explanation was simple, even if unusu-

al. Close observation of the people interacting
with Hans showed that their breathing and fa-

cial expression changed slightly each time the
horse made the ‘correct’ number of taps. The
horse was able to notice those subtle changes
and stopped tapping. It turned out that Hans
had no real understanding of mathematics, but
could read the signals sent unconsciously by the
human questioners.

For the past two years, Sheila Cannon has

been feeding six wild cats that live near her fa-
mily home in Firewood, Virginia. The cats got
used to their regular meals and to Sheila coming
close. Only one refused to be touched – a black
beauty with green eyes, she was not playful like
the other cats. Sheila called her Teri and tried to
make friends, but Teri would only get her lunch
and disappear. After a year or so she would let
Sheila within five feet of her but no closer.

That wasn’t a problem until one day in No-

vember, when Teri showed up with a peanut but-
ter jar stuck on her head. It was obvious that she
couldn’t free herself. Sheila and her younger
brother tried to get her, but being the type of cat
you can’t catch, Teri kept running around and
hiding. “We were leaving town for Thanksgiving,
so I called the animal shelter for help,” said She-
ila. “They set a trap but Teri refused to get tric-
ked into it. I thought she was going to die with
that jar on her head.”

Teri was spotted a few times at night but all

attempts to catch her were in vain. Then she di-
sappeared. When the family returned home and

Da meine Mutter ein Diätenberater isst, legt

man bei uns zu Hause einen großen Wert da-
rauf, was man verspeist. Fettreiche oder süße
Sachen finden bei uns keine Anwendung. Wir
essen viele Eiweißprodukte, frisches Obst und
Gemüse. Meine Mutter ist eine sehr gute Köchin
und sie meistert wirklich fantastische Leckereien
zum Frühstück und Mittagessen. Das Frühstück
darf auf keinen Fall vergessen werden. Egal, wo
wir sind, versuchen wir es immer zusammen
zu essen, ich nehme mir auch immer ein Pau-
senbrot in die Schule. Beim Mittagessen, außer
einer Suppe gibt es zum Hauptgericht einen
Fisch jeden zweiten Tag und zweimal in der Wo-
che gekochtes Hähnchen. Wir ziehen Reis den
Nudeln und Kartoffeln vor und trinken ha-
uptsächlich stilles Mineralwasser oder Säfte.
Zum Nachtisch bekomme ich Obst und nur am
Wochenende Eis oder Kuchen. Abends wird bei
uns nicht mehr gegessen. Der Magen soll eine
längere Pause einlegen. Dank unseren Essge-
wohnheiten klagt bei uns niemand über Über-
gewicht. Meine Mutter hat solch eine Figur, als
wäre sie eine Siebzehnjährige.

Ich esse immer, was ich im Kühlschrank fin-

de. Mein Vater macht gewöhnlich die Einkäufe
und kauft Produkte, die schmackhaft sind. Ich
kann immer darauf rechnen, dass eine Flasche
Cola oder ein Bierwurst auf mich zu Hause war-
ten. Meine Mutti hat eine Schichtarbeit, deshalb
passiert es oft, dass ich mir das Mittagessen selbst
erwärmen oder sogar vorbereiten muss. Man-
chmal komme ich bei meiner Oma vorbei, die
natürlich für mich immer etwas bereit hält. Sie
bäckt den besten Käsekuchen in der Welt und
brät die leckersten Pfannkuchen. In der Schu-
le trinke ich Sprite und kaufe mir immer etwas
in dem Schulladen z.B. einen Schokoriegel oder
Kartoffelchips. Wenn ich mir meine Schulfreun-

Teri was nowhere to be seen, Sheila assumed the
cat would never turn up again. But then on Tu-
esday, Sheila’s brother called her to the garden.
Teri was sitting in a dark corner behind the ga-
rage. She was dehydrated, exhausted and too
weak to escape. With fishing net in hand, they
finally caught her. “She didn’t even try to fight
because she was barely breathing,” said Sheila.
“I used some oil to get her head out of the jar.”

They gave her water, treated her wounds and

put her in a cage. By Friday she’d started to eat
again. Dr. Kevin Blackburn, a veterinarian from
Animal Hospital in Richmond, said he’d heard
about similar incidents. Teri had spent ninete-
en days with her head in the jar.

minute hoping to find something that will do. If
you’re going to do that you might as well buy all
of them Christmas mugs with a happy snowman
and hope they don’t hate it as much as you do.
No, that is not my way. I think about the gifts
months ahead, plan carefully, pen in hand, who
gets what and start buying before anyone ever
mentions the word Christmas. That way I’m do-
ne before most people even begin. And I know
my gifts are from the heart.

Oh, I love Christmas shopping! I walk aro-

und the stores enjoying the atmosphere and wat-
ching the people buying this and that and I al-
ways have ten million ideas. It’s just deciding
what exactly I’m going to buy that is sooo diffi-
cult! I mean a necklace looks good but a beauti-
ful china mug looks even better. And so I keep
browsing and thinking and then before I know
it, I’ve got one day left and no gifts. All of my ac-
tual shopping then has to done within two ho-
urs. But I always promise myself to start early
the following year.

I don’t really understand all of these peo-

ple. I mean do you really know what your friends
and family would like to get? Because I don’t.
So those crazy crowds buying everything that’s
in the shops just to get something don’t make
sense to me. I mean, why spend all that money
on things that will be thrown away right after
Christmas. That’s why rather than spending
a fortune I just buy each of my loved ones a ti-
ny gift. I believe that’s enough to let them know
I love them.

Who makes the most movies in the world? If

you think the answer is Hollywood than you are
even more behind than Iwas. The new leading pro-
duction spot is Bollywood – the Hollywood of In-
dia. India now produces about 900 movies a year.
That makes about three aday, can you imagine that?
And the most popular actors are often on two dif-
ferent sets a day, playing two different characters.

Now I’m sure there are some snobbish film cri-

tics who say they have been to every Bollywood
movie night, but I’m not one of them. I’m about as
experienced in Bollywood as most of you are in
Chinese opera. But when I got an opportunity to
talk on TV about Bollywood’s chances for an Oscar
Ididn’t think much. Iborrowed asari and was rea-
dy to go. I was like a 14-year-old boy with a Britney
Spears calendar. The emotions I felt were strange
and alien – but I loved every exciting minute of it.

I watched the film that was nominated for an

Oscar, entitled ”Lagaan,” and wanted more. I ren-
ted another mega hit, starring the famous Bol-
lywood male and female star. Both extremely
good looking, they gaze at you from the TV scre-
en with those gorgeous hazel eyes that the who-
le world is in love with. I was thrilled. The film
had everything that makes Bollywood so new
to a Western audience. Everything was in vibrant
color and it was full of rhythmical songs that ma-
ke you feel like dancing. I actually wished I knew
how. And there is enough tragic love stories to
fill three romance books. If you’re not the cry-
ing romantic type then stay at home. If you like
stories which are realistic and believable then,
frankly, save your pennies. Otherwise, go and
rent whatever has Bollywood on the cover.

I personally then went out and bought Bol-

lywood’s third most successful film of all time.
The main male character once again has the sa-
me face and the same beautiful eyes. It does not
bother me. Obviously he is the best looking man
in India. Now I’m hunting the DVD stores for
another movie with the same guy, this time ma-
king you believe he is a college student. It sho-
uld not bother you that he looks at least 10 years
older than his fellow students.

The point to this cinematic diary I’m sharing

with you? Just when you think you’ve seen it all,
you really haven’t. I’ve discovered something
new, probably ages behind everyone else, but
new to me. And, like it was when I first got into
movies, there’s a whole world of new films for
me to discover out there.

Kleine Fettröllchen an meiner Taille sind doch
kein Grund zum Weinen.

Vor eineinhalb Jahren habe ich Peter zum

ersten Mal gesehen. Damals fand ich ihn ein we-
nig eingebildet, weil er alles machte, um die Auf-
merksamkeit auf sich zu ziehen. Es war eine Par-
ty, alle haben getanzt und der hat nur von sei-
nen Abenteuern in der Türkei erzählt. Ich dach-
te mir, dass er zwar gut aussieht, aber nichts
mehr anzubieten hat. Nach einem Monat sind
wir uns an der Uni begegnet. Er wollte sich nach
Stipendien in Deutschland erkundigen und ich
wartete auf meinen Vater, der dort eine Vorle-
sung hielt. Peter erkannte mich sofort und so
haben wir begonnen miteinander zu plaudern.
Diesmal habe ich mehr geredet und es stellte
sich heraus, dass er auch zuhören kann. Er
empfahl mir ein Buch, das er letztens gelesen
hat und bevor wir uns verabschiedeten, bat auch
um meine Telefonnummer. Da ich ihn nach die-
ser Begegnung nicht mehr so hochnäsig fand,
bekam er die Nummer. Er rief mich schon am
nächsten Tag an und seit diesem Moment sind
wir ein Paar.

Zadanie 2.

Vorige Woche ist es in Neustadt an der Do-

nau zu einem Dammbruch gekommen. Infol-
ge starker Niederschläge ist der Wasserspiegel
blitzschnell gestiegen. Dazu hat noch das Tau-
wetter beigetragen. Das über die Ufer gekom-
mene Wasser hat die Felder und viele Bau-
ernhöfe überflutet. Niemand hat es erwartet,
deshalb sind die Bauern in Panik geraten. Die
Menschen haben versucht, ihren Besitz zu ret-
ten. Da es zu diesem Unglück in der Nacht ge-
kommen ist, war es besonders schwierig, alles
in die oberen Stockwerke zu bringen. Nicht al-
le Schweine und Kühe konnten gerettet wer-
den. Manche sind im Wasser ertrunken. Zum
Glück gab es keine Opfer unter den Menschen.
Da die Strom —und Telefonleitungen unter Was-
ser stehen, gibt es jetzt eigentlich Kontakt mit
den Betroffenen nur durch Mobiltelefon. Die
Landesregierung hat das Rote Kreuz und die
Soldaten um Hilfe gebeten. Viele Leute wollen
aber ihr Zuhause nicht verlassen, weil sie Angst
vor den Einbrechern haben. Diesen Bürgern
muss man Trinkwasser und Nahrung liefern.
Hoffentlich gelingt es bald, die Situation unter
Kontrolle zu bringen. Alle Personen, die mithel-
fen wollen, können unter der Nummer 334422
anrufen. Der hiesige Bürgermeister erteilt ge-
naue Informationen.
