Chapter 11 — Exam Question 2
Give three reasons for field observations in the process of image interpretation.
Answer
Field observations are needed in the process of visual image interpretation for
the following reasons:
1. For better identification of features, since in that way it is based on know-
ledge collected prior to the interpretation itself,
2. for completeness of interpretation results with respect to features which
cannot be fully seen in the image (e.g. a house and a road an a forest), and
3. for validation, as a mean to assess the accuracy of our visual interpretation.
That is, with respect to both the geometric and the thematic accuracy of the
interpretation.
