Backgrounds: Patients with acute coronary syndrom especially complicated by cardiogenic shock have a high mortality (about 80% early mortality based on historical data). We analysed the influence on in-hospital and long-term mortality in patients with acute coronary syndrom with cardiogenic shock treated by high-risk percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) with intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP).
Methods: The retrospective analysis included data of 30 patients (11 women, 19 men; mean age 66 ± 9 years) in cardiogenic shock treated with PTCA and IABP from 1997 to1999 ( 0,9% of all PTCA procedures). Coronary angiography showed one-vessel disease in 20 %, more vessel disease in 80%. Mean ejection fraction 29,7 ± 13,5 %. In-hospital mortality was tested after 13 ± 10 days, long-term mortality was tested after 1,25 years (457 ± 290 days).
Results: In-hospital mortality was 46,7 %, long-term mortality was 58,6 %.
Conclusions: PTCA with IABP in the setting of acute coronary syndrom complicated by
cardiogenic shock reduced in-hospital and long-term mortality.
