Some people think it is a good idea for students to work for at least a year before going to university. But is this always a good thing?

Firstly, most students don't know what they want to do after secondary school. What you study can determine what work you can do for the rest of your life. Therefore, it is vital that students make the right decision. Waiting a year before they start university can give them an idea of what work is available. This will help them choose a career.

Furthermore, working for a year can give students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience that they would not get if they just continued their studies. This can not only help them with their course work, but can also aid them when it comes to finding work after they finish their degree.

All in all, I think it is a good idea for students to work for a year before continuing their studies at university. Not only will it help them make a good career choice but it will also allow them to gain valuable work experience.

In picture 1 there is a family gathered around a table. There is a mum, a dad, a grandmother, a son and a daughter. On the table, there are presents and a cake with a candle in the shape of 16 on it. I think they are celebrating the daughter's 16th birthday and they are all very happy.

In picture 2 there is a family outside the shops. There is a mum, a dad, a son and a daughter. They are shopping together. The mum and dad are carrying bags with their shopping in it. They are all smiling so I think they are enjoying shopping together.

b) Suggested Answer

SA: I think a large family is better. In a large family you are never lonely. There is always someone to talk to and help you when you have a problem.

SB: Yes, but then you are never alone. You don't get any time to yourself. I think a small family is better. You at least get some privacy.

SA: That's true, I suppose. Also, you don't have to buy as many presents for birthdays and Christmas!

SB: No, you don't, but you also don't receive as many presents!

I was asleep in bed one night when, suddenly, a loud noise woke me. At first, I thought that maybe there was a car accident on the road outside, but then the house began to shake. The shaking became quite violent. I didn't know what to do.

Suddenly, a tree came crashing through my bedroom window! I screamed as glass rained down on my covers. I couldn't move because the tree trapped my legs. I shouted for help! What seemed like hours passed before I heard someone at my door. But they couldn't get in because the tree was blocking the door. A recue worker had to climb in through the broken window to reach me.

I was so happy to see the rescue worker and relieved when he cut me free. Luckily, I wasn't badly hurt. Just a few cuts and bruises, but it could have been a lot worse.

a) Suggested Answer

Picture 1 looks like it was taken on a beach. It seems to show the effects of an oil spill. There is oil all over the beach and people are cleaning it up. I think an oil tanker must have capsized off the coast of the beach. Due to this, the local wildlife was probably put at risk as oil spill can kill fish as well as sea birds.

Picture 2 looks like it was taken in a city of town. It shows a car stuck in a flood. The man who probably owns the car is standing beside it speaking on his mobile phone. I think it has rained heavily in the area and a nearby river has probably burst its banks. As a result of this, cars, homes and businesses have probably been damaged.

b) Suggested Answer

SA: How do you think we can avoid the catastrophe in picture 1?

SB: Well, oil companies have to be more careful when they transport their oil. For example, there should be more checks to make sure that tankers are in a good condition.

SA: I agree. And maybe governments should introduce large fines for and tankers that don't follow safety regulations.

SB: What about the second picture?

SA: Well, to avoid flood, town councils could invest in barriers so that river don't overflow.

SB: That's a good idea. They could also provide sandbags so that floodwater doesn't enter people's homes.

Summary 1: Titanic tells the true story of the passenger ship RMS Titanic which sank in 1912. At the beginning of the film, the ship sets off on its maiden from the UK to the USA. While crossing the North Atlantic Ocean, the ship collides with an iceberg and begins to sink. Some passengers survive by escaping on lifeboats but many drown. Alongside these disastrous events, the film has a very emotional romantic plotline.

Summary 2: The Perfect Storm is based on a true story. The film follows the crew of the Andrea Gail, a fishing boat. They go on a risky fishing expedition very late into the season. They manage to catch many fish but because of a problem with the ship they have to hurry back to the shore. However, the stormy weather soon develops into a hurricane and, suddenly, the boat sinks under the weight of an enormous tidal wave.

Summary 3: The Day After Tomorrow is a fictional disaster film in which the world suffers from a series of extreme weather phenomena including storms, tornados, hurricanes, floods and tsunamis, all due to global warming. Humans around the world try to move to safer areas to save their lives.

Dear Mr Reynolds,

I am writing with regards to the advertisement for weekend staff which I saw in the window of your shop. I would like to apply for this position.

I am 17 and am currently studying for my A levels. When I finish school, I hope to work in retail. A job in your shop would be an ideal way for me to get some experience. I haven't worked in retail before, but I was a waitress in a restaurant last summer. I enjoyed talking to the customers and my employers commented on my friendly, cheerful attitude.

I am hardworking and reliable and I think I would be a good addition to the staff at The Gift Box. Working there would also be a valuable learning experience for me.

I would be grateful if you would consider my application. I have attached my CV and references from my previous employers. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Wendy Huffington

Black Sails is an American TV drama set on the island of New Providence in the Bahamas. It follows the adventures of a group of pirates, including Captain Flint and other characters from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island.

The story begins when a young man named John Silver, played by Australian actor Luke Arnold, joins Captain Flint's crew. Together, they plan to attack a government ship and steal the gold on board. However, Flint's crew don't trust him and they try to replace him as captain. Meanwhile, on New Providence Island, Flint's enemy, Captain Charles Vane, has plans of his own.

The cast of Black Sails are very talented and the characters are well-developed. The plot is sometimes predictable, but the special effects and action sequences are exciting enough to keep the audience entertained.

Black Sails is an enjoyable programme. If you like adventure, it will not disappoint you. I would definitely recommend it.

Homelessness is a serious problem in our society. Every night, thousands of people are forced to sleep on the streets. What can we do to solve this problem?

One solution is for the government to introduce more affordable housing. One reason why so many people are homeless is because rents are so high these days. The authorities should build apartments with cheap rents so that lower class people can pay for their accommodation comfortably.

Another solution is to create more jobs. Many people become homeless due to unemployment. If the authorities created more jobs, less people would be at risk of becoming homeless.

To sum up, it is the government's responsibility to deal with the problem of homelessness. By building more affordable housing and creating more jobs, they can make sure that fewer people become homeless in our society.

In picture 1 was taken outdoors, possibly in a zoo or an animal shelter. It shows a man and a very large turtle. My guess is that this turtle is an endangered species. The man is touching the turtle's neck and the turtle doesn't seem to be scared of him. I think the man feels amazed to be so close to such a beautiful animal.

In picture 2 was taken at a beach. There is a large bridge in the background. I can see several people holding plastic bags and picking up rubbish. The beach looks very dirty. The people probably feel angry about the litter which has been thrown on the beach.

b) Suggested Answer

SA: I think that the fact that so many animals are endangered is a very serious problem. By allowing animals to become extinct, we are denying future generations the chance to see them up close.

SB: That's true. Also, polluted beaches is another serious problem. Litter on beaches can greatly affect the local wildlife. For example, many turtles die because they eat plastic bags thinking that they are jellyfish.

SA: That's awful. So, how can we solve these problems?

SB: Well, we can help solve the problem of endangered species by supporting charities that protect their natural habitats.

SA: Good idea. And for polluted beaches, I think people should join clean-up campaigns like the one shown in the picture.

• by installing motion sensors that automatically turn lights on and off you can save a lot of energy and money? Households pay £100 per year to light rooms that have no one there.

• you can save energy by washing your clothes with cold instead of hot water? Often, your clothes don't require hot water to wash properly and most laundry detergents work just as well with cold water. Doing this can save you 40 cents per load!

• by installing blinds or shutters you can reduce the amount of heat lost through windows by 40%? This means that for every £1,000 spent on heating you could save £70!

Dear Becky,

I'm sorry to hear that you are worried about losing the tennis competition. It must be really awful for you, but I think I can help.

If I were you, I'd imagine myself at the tennis competition feeling relaxed and confident. This way, you will not feel anxious when you get to the competition. Also, why don't you practise with someone before the competition? If you do this, you will be better prepared and will have the comfort of knowing that you won't embarrass yourself in front of everyone.

I think you should definitely enter the competition because if you don't, you will regret it afterwards. I hope these ideas are useful. Write and tell me how you get on.

Best wishes,

Tina

Suggested Answer

Nowadays, many people diet in order to lose weight. Being overweight has a number of negative consequences, but is dieting the most effective way to improve your health?

There are a number of advantages to dieting. To begin with, the main benefit is that it can help you lose weight. In turn, you would have a reduced risk of a number of health problems. Furthermore, dieting can improve your self-esteem. This means that you would feel better about yourself and have more confidence.

On the other hand, dieting has a number of disadvantages. To start with, people who diet sometimes don't get enough nutrients. This may lead to further health problems as your body is not getting everything that it needs. In addition, dieting can make you feel weak and tired. Consequently, you wouldn't have as much energy as you should.

All in all, although there are numerous advantages to dieting, I believe that most people do not need to do it. Instead, the best solution is to change your lifestyle in general, which includes eating healthily and getting regular exercise.

Dear Lilly,

How are you? I'd be glad to help you with your project. There are many places in Italy that have historical importance. One of the most famous is the Coliseum in Rome. It's a huge amphitheatre that was built in the time of the ancient Romans. It was used for chariot racing as well as for gladiator battles!

The structure is very impressive. It consists of many huge stone arches and is the largest amphitheatre in the world. Visitors can get guided tours around the Coliseum and can learn about the history of this great landmark. They can also buy souvenirs to take home with them.

I have to go now. I hope this will help you with your project.

Best wishes,

Adam
